FreeWill

FreeWill offers free online estate planning documents and sells fundraising and donor management software to nonprofits, generating charitable gift commitments.

FreeWill is a social-good enterprise founded in 2017 as a Stanford graduate project. It provides free, comprehensive online estate planning tools to individuals while generating charitable gift commitments for nonprofit organisations. Its flagship estate planning suite lets users create legally binding wills, revocable living trusts, advance healthcare directives, financial powers of attorney and beneficiary designations at no cost, with the aim of widening access for Americans excluded from estate planning by cost and complexity. More than 1.4m people have created estate planning documents on the platform.

Alongside the consumer tools, FreeWill sells a set of products to nonprofits: planned giving suites for soliciting and capturing legacy gifts, smart giving tools for tax-efficient donations, and a donor management platform. The company reports more than 2,300 nonprofit partners and $13 billion in charitable commitments generated to date; it has stated a goal of directing $1 trillion to charity over the course of an $84 trillion intergenerational wealth transfer in the United States over the next two decades. It describes itself as America's most popular online estate planning platform.

The work spans legal technology, online document automation, web platform development and donor management software. Engineering standards are formal: the company maintains SOC 2 Type II compliance for security and builds to WCAG 2.1 Level AA for web accessibility. The operating model combines social impact with business revenue. FreeWill is based in the United States and has been featured in the New York Times, Forbes and Oprah's magazine.
